Week 2 hit me harder than Week 1. The “new baby high” wore off and suddenly I was weepy at noon, raging at 3pm, and numb by dinner.
I’m Vera, biochemist + mom of 2. Week 2 postpartum is when estrogen and progesterone drop off a cliff while prolactin stays sky-high and dopamine crashes. That’s why you cry at commercials and snap at your partner over nothing. It’s not you failing – it’s chemistry.

Week 2 is all about stabilizing prolactin and rebuilding dopamine with simple food cues and sunlight. Get this right and the afternoon mood swings, rage, and mental fog calm down.
Below is exactly what I did Days 8–9 to stop 3pm rage. This is straight from Week 2 of my 21-Day Postpartum Hormone Reset Protocol.
Let’s balance your mood right now:
Why Week 2 Feels Like “I Feel Nothing” or “I’m Raging”
During Week 2, prolactin (your milk-producing hormone) remains high, making you deeply emotional, while dopamine (your brain’s motivation and drive hormone) crashes post-birth. This combination triggers dramatic swings between feeling completely numb (“I feel nothing”) or hyper-reactive (“I feel everything”).
Furthermore, low blood sugar hitting an already hormone-depleted brain at 10am and 3pm creates instant rage or sudden weeping over a Huggies ad. Eating protein before these danger zones hits is essential to keeping your baseline steady.
Days 8-9: Sunlight Protocol + Dopamine Meals
Rule: Keep your Week 1 blood sugar food rules intact while adding morning sunlight and tyrosine-dense foods to rebuild dopamine.
Morning Sunlight Protocol (Do within 30 minutes of waking)
- Get Outside: Spend 10 minutes outdoors without sunglasses. Coffee is OK; looking at your phone is NOT OK.
- Face East: Natural ambient light hitting your retina signals your brain to set its circadian cortisol and dopamine rhythm.
- Overcast or Raining? Use a 10,000-lux light box while feeding the baby.
- Why It Works: Sunlight in the AM directly drives dopamine production for better mood during the day and sets up melatonin production for deeper sleep at night.
Dopamine-Rebuilding Meals
- Breakfast: 3 eggs (rich in tyrosine, the amino acid precursor to dopamine).
- Lunch: Turkey roll-ups + sliced parmesan cheese (additional tyrosine boost).
- Snack: 1 square of 85% dark chocolate + a handful of pumpkin seeds (loaded with essential magnesium and zinc).
C-Section Note: If your incision is tender, skip walking – simply sit in an open doorway for 10 minutes of direct sunlight.
Vaginal Birth Note: If bleeding remains heavy, prioritize iron-rich foods today like grass-fed beef and cooked spinach.
2 Brazil Nuts for Thyroid + Mood Support
Postpartum thyroiditis affects 1 in 12 mothers, causing severe exhaustion, depression, and brain fog. Your thyroid requires selenium to process and convert thyroid hormones effectively.
- The 2 Brazil Nuts Rule: Consuming 2 Brazil nuts daily provides roughly 200mcg of selenium – the exact amount needed to feed your thyroid.
- Missed a day? Eat 4 nuts the next day. Just avoid skipping two days in a row.
Full thyroid protocols, daily food lists, and iodine-dense meals are detailed in the full protocol below.
Crying vs. PPD Red Flags
It is critical to distinguish normal hormonal weeping from Postpartum Depression (PPD) or severe mood disorders:
- Normal Hormonal Weeping: Triggered easily by commercials or small inconveniences, lasts 10–30 minutes, and occurs mostly during blood sugar dips (around 3pm or 3am). You still feel like yourself afterward.
- Red Flag Symptoms: You cannot sleep even when the baby sleeps for 3+ hours, you experience intrusive thoughts of harming yourself or the baby, or you feel completely unable to function.
- Clinical Intervention: If you experience red flags, contact your OB immediately or call/text 988. You are not a bad mother for needing medical support or prescription assistance (like Zoloft, which is safe with breastfeeding).
A full PPD evaluation checklist and doctor conversation templates are in the protocol.
