If you’re reading this at 10am with cold coffee in one hand and a crying baby in the other, I see you.
I’m Vera, biochemist + mom of 2. After my c-section, I crashed every single morning at 10am. Shaky, angry, ready to cry over nothing. My OB said “it’s normal hormones”. It wasn’t normal – it was blood sugar + cortisol crashing.
Week 1 of postpartum is all about one thing: stabilizing blood sugar + cortisol. Fix this week and 80% of the exhaustion disappears. Ignore it and you’ll crash daily for 12 weeks.
Below is exactly what I ate Days 1-3 to stop the 10am crash. No supplements. No complicated recipes. Just hormone-safe food that keeps you steady when you’re running on 2 hours of sleep.

Let’s fix 10am right now:
Why You Crash at 10am Every Morning
On Day 1, after the placenta comes out, your estrogen drops 90% in 24 hours, and progesterone disappears completely – making you cry over a dropped spoon. By Day 3, cortisol spikes 400% from sleep loss, blood sugar tanks from missed meals, prolactin floods in for milk supply, and dopamine is completely empty.
By Week 2, estrogen drops to menopause-level lows while thyroid function slows down by 20%, leaving you feeling empty or numb. The result? A 10am crash, 3pm rage, and searching “I hate motherhood” on Google at 2am.
Bottom Line: Doctors check the baby. Nobody checks this. Blood sugar + cortisol instability is the real root cause, and it can be fixed day by day.
Week 1 Days 1-3: Exact Meals
WEEK 1 GOAL: Stop the crash. Eat within 1 hour of waking. Combine protein + fat at every meal.
Breakfast (Eat within 60 minutes of waking)
- C-Section Route: 3 eggs + ½ avocado + 1 slice sourdough + 2 Brazil nuts
- Vaginal Birth Route: Full-fat Greek yogurt + 1 tbsp almond butter + fresh berries + 1 tbsp ground flax
Lunch
- Rotisserie chicken + roasted sweet potato + drizzle of olive oil + bagged spinach
- Partner text idea: “Buy rotisserie chicken + spinach. Reheat = done”.
Dinner
- Salmon or ground beef + roasted broccoli + cooked quinoa
- C-Section Addition: Add 1 cup bone broth for extra collagen and healing.
CRITICAL RULE: No naked carbs. Carbs eaten alone create a massive blood sugar spike followed by a steep drop – guaranteeing a 10am crash.
Week 1 Days 1-3: Snacks + 5-Min Cortisol Drop
Snacks (Eat every 2–3 hours)
- Hard-boiled eggs
- Cheese sticks
- Walnuts or almonds
- Apple slice + peanut butter
- Hospital Bag Go-To: Beef jerky + almonds in a ziplock bag
5-Minute Cortisol Drop
When the baby won’t nap and you feel like screaming:
- Safety First: Put baby down in a safe space (like the crib). Step outside or stand by an open window.
- Ground Yourself: Place bare feet on the floor for 60 seconds.
- 4-7-8 Breathing: Inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 7 seconds, exhale slowly for 8 seconds. Complete 3 full rounds.
- Hydrate: Drink 8oz of water with a small pinch of sea salt. (Dehydration directly triggers a cortisol spike!)
Avoid in Days 1–7: Drinking coffee before food, skipping meals, fruit juices, or eating cereal alone.
What If You’re Still Crashing at 10am?
If you are following the plan and still feeling the crash, run through this quick 2-step audit:
- Did you eat within 60 minutes of waking? If you delayed breakfast, your body released cortisol to mobilize glucose, setting off a crash later.
- Was breakfast purely carbs? Oatmeal alone will spike and crash your system. Pair it with eggs or healthy fats to stabilize your curve.
Full troubleshooting, night-feed strategies, and Day 4–7 fixes are included in the complete protocol below.
